New Jersey net metering, explained
How your meter turns extra solar power into credit on your bill.
What it is
When your panels make more power than your home uses, the extra goes to the grid. Your utility credits your account for it.
The credit is full retail
In New Jersey, you receive full retail credit for each kilowatt-hour your system produces over the course of a year. That is the same rate you pay for power you buy.
How it plays out
Summer days give you extra credit. Winter nights draw from the grid. Over the year, the credits balance what you pull.
What you still pay
There can be small fixed charges on your bill. Net metering reduces what you pay for usage, not those fixed fees.
Why it matters
Net metering is why you do not need a battery to benefit from solar. The grid acts as your storage.
